🛠️ Common Issues & Reliability
The Honda Element enjoys above-average reliability, but like any vehicle, it has a few known issues.
-
Door Lock Actuator Failure
-
- Issue: Power door locks may stop functioning properly, particularly on the driver’s side.
- Symptoms: Difficulty locking/unlocking doors, clicking noise.
- Fix: Replace faulty actuator.
- Cost: $200–$400 per actuator.
-
VTEC Solenoid Leaks / Failures
-
- Issue: Oil leaks from the VTEC solenoid gasket are common.
- Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle, check engine light.
- Fix: Replace solenoid gasket.
- Cost: $150–$250.
-
Rear Differential Fluid Deterioration (AWD Models)
-
- Issue: Real-Time AWD system requires regular fluid changes. Neglecting this can cause jerky operation during tight turns.
- Symptoms: Grinding or binding noise when turning.
- Fix: Drain and replace rear differential fluid.
- Cost: $80–$150.
-
Windshield Cracks
-
- Issue: The upright windshield design makes it prone to rock chips and cracks.
- Symptoms: Visible cracks, potential leaks.
- Fix: Replace windshield if damaged.
- Cost: $200–$500.
-
AC Compressor Clutch Failure
-
- Issue: The AC compressor clutch may wear out over time, causing the AC to stop cooling.
- Symptoms: Warm air from vents, clicking noise from the compressor.
- Fix: Replace compressor clutch or entire compressor.
- Cost: $500–$1,200.
-
Starter Motor Failure
-
- Issue: Premature starter motor failure may prevent the engine from turning over.
- Symptoms: Clicking noise when turning the key, engine not cranking.
- Fix: Replace starter motor.
- Cost: $300–$600.
Common Mechanical Issues
- Engine (K24A4 2.4L i-VTEC)
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Worn piston rings (especially in higher-mileage engines) lead to oil burning. Check oil levels frequently.
- Timing Chain Tensioner Failure: Rattling noises at startup or idle signal a failing tensioner. Replace promptly to avoid chain slippage.
- Valve Adjustment Needed: Rough idling or misfires may require valve lash adjustments every 30k–60k miles.
- Automatic Transmission
- Slipping or Rough Shifts: Less common than in other Hondas, but fluid degradation can cause issues. Regular fluid changes (every 30k miles) are critical.
- Torque Converter Shudder: Vibration during acceleration; a fluid flush often resolves it.
- Suspension
- Front Lower Control Arm Bushings: Cracked or worn bushings cause clunking over bumps.
- Rear Trailing Arm Bushings: Degradation leads to uneven tire wear or handling instability.
- Brakes
- Premature Rotor Warping: Warped rotors cause pulsation during braking. Upgrade to quality aftermarket rotors.
- Sticky Calipers: Seized calipers (especially rear) lead to uneven pad wear.
- A/C System
- Compressor Failure: Common in older models; recharge or replace as needed.
- Refrigerant Leaks: Often from O-rings or condenser damage.
Common Electrical Issues
- Power Window Regulators: Slow operation or failure due to worn motors or cables.
- Tailgate Wiring Harness: Frequent opening/closing stresses the harness, causing faults in rear wiper or lock circuits.
- ABS Modulator Failures: ABS warning lights or pump motor failure (costly repair).
- Door Lock Actuators: Intermittent locking/unlocking issues.
Rust and Body Issues
- Undercarriage/Rockers: Susceptible to rust in snowy/salty regions. Inspect thoroughly.
- Rear Wheel Arches: Hidden rust under plastic cladding.
Key Recalls
- Takata Airbag Inflators: NHTSA 16V-356 (driver’s side; risk of rupture).
- Driver’s Seat Belt Buckle: NHTSA 10V-045 (2003–2004 models; may not latch properly).
- Ignition Switch: NHTSA 13V-131 (2003–2007 models; potential engine stall).
📅 Maintenance Schedule
| Service Item | Interval (Miles / Km) | Notes |
| Oil & Filter Change | Every 5,000 miles / 8,000 km | 5W-20 synthetic recommended |
| Air Filter Replacement | Every 30,000 miles / 48,000 km | |
| Cabin Air Filter | Every 20,000 miles / 32,000 km | |
| Transmission Fluid Change | Every 30,000 miles / 48,000 km | Essential for AWD models |
| Coolant Flush | Every 45,000 miles / 72,000 km | |
| Brake Fluid Replacement | Every 3 years or 36,000 miles | |
| Spark Plug Replacement | Every 100,000 miles / 160,000 km | |
| Rear Differential Fluid (AWD) | Every 30,000 miles / 48,000 km | Prevents binding issues |
Recommendations
- Oil Maintenance: Use5W-20 synthetic blend and check levels monthly. Address oil consumption with piston ring replacement if severe.
- Suspension Inspection: Replace worn bushings and ball joints to restore handling.

- Issue: Ignition key could be removed without the vehicle in park, increasing the risk of a rollaway.
- Fix: Inspection and repair of interlock mechanism.
- Stability Control Software Update (2007–2008 Models)
- Issue: Improper software calibration may cause stability control to malfunction.
- Fix: Software update.
🆚 Competitors & Alternatives

Addressed recalls (especially Takata airbags).
Pro Tip: The Element’s unique design makes it ideal for camping/outdoor use, but modifications (e.g., roof racks) can strain stock components. Budget 1 , 500 – 1,500–3,000 annually for maintenance/repairs on high-mileage examples.
🔚 Final Verdict
The 2004–2008 Honda Element offers a unique blend of practicality, ruggedness, and reliability. While it may not be the most refined or luxurious crossover, its versatile cargo space, durable interior, and optional AWD make it a top choice for outdoor enthusiasts and active lifestyles.
👉 Verdict: Ideal for those seeking a flexible, easy-to-maintain, and adventure-ready vehicle. 🚙✅

I was looking for a complete wiring diagram of the fuel system for my Honda. Chilton and Haynes manuals covers only basic things. My dad was a mechanic so he was used to using a Chilton. But when I bought my first car I wound up getting a Dardoor manual… which is much better.

I found this manual after searching for the digital one that got me started about 6 years ago in electrical diagnostics and after finding it figured I would give it a review it’s a amazing manual for technicians. It really breaks down some tests and components in glossy easy to understand color photos. I would recommend this manual to anyone interested or struggling with repairing his Honda Element.

I recently bought a 2008 Honda element. I had my mechanic go over it part by part and make numerous replacements and upgrades. A day after I brought the car home it would not start. The mechanic had a number of ideas, but, ultimately, I was going to have to get the car back to him. This would be an ordeal because, well, the car would not start.
One of my first purchases when I brought the car home was the Dardoor manual for the Honda element. I used to always get Dardoor manual when I owned cars in the 90’s. You could fix most problems without a lift and special equipment then the Dardoor manual downloaded in the morning. I read the chapter on starter motors and had the car running in about 2 hours. The manual walked me through the steps to diagnose the problem and, once I knew what it was, how to repair it.
Fortunately, this was a relatively easy fix. But I’d still be tearing my hair out trying to diagnose the problem with YouTube videos and random suggestions from people with “helpful” suggestions involving crystals and checking tire pressure without a well-written and serious manual Dardoor provided.

Allan Rod (verified owner) –
After 50 years of building and playing with cars I find you can no longer fix them with a set of AF spaners and a big hammer! I wanted to understand how they now work. This service manual is written very well and is easy for an old boy like me to understand what happens in modern cars.
Ronald L. (verified owner) –
Good to know what wire go’s where, thanks
Matthew W (verified owner) –
I’m an old guy who works on cars as a habit from years past and to save a buck when I can. I saw a scanner in Walmart for $98. I inferred that that product was legitimate, capable, and designed for people with my general level of ability. Online research let me confirm that, so I decided to buy a scanner. Spending extra money for a manual is never easy, but it is something that I usually do. I’ve probably got sixty service manuals over the years from auto body repair to engine rebuild.
Abdel-Razek (verified owner) –
This manual has quickly become one of my favourite workshop manuals!
Howling Coyote (verified owner) –
Very informative manual
Tim Rogers (verified owner) –
Needed this for a project car.
Hannah R (verified owner) –
This is a fantastic manual, and Dardoor really knows how to put things in plain English. A couple of points I’d like to make:
– The manual left you wanting more…more projects, more information…just…more. they are happy to give everyone
– I read his manual cover to cover and still felt I didn’t quite “get” all the information.
Logan (verified owner) –
Great manual lots of information that I didn’t have a clue on,a definite buy for this type of information.
