🛠️ Common Issues with the 2012 Nissan Altima

Common Mechanical Issues

  1. CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) Problems

    • Problem: Rough shifting, hesitation, or complete transmission failure. The CVT is a known weak point in the 2012 Altima.
    • Fix: Software updates or transmission replacement (often under extended warranty for CVT issues).
  1. Engine Performance

    • 2.5L QR25DE 4-Cylinder Engine:
      • Excessive oil consumption, leading to low oil levels and potential engine damage.
      • Fix: Regular oil level checks and top-offs. In severe cases, piston ring replacement may be necessary.
    • 3.5L VQ35DE V6 Engine:
      • Generally reliable, but some reports of oil leaks or timing chain tensioner issues.
  1. Steering System

    • Problem: Power steering fluid leaks or failure, leading to stiff steering.
    • Fix: Replace leaking hoses or the power steering rack.
  1. Brake System

    • Problem: Premature brake pad/rotor wear or squeaking noises.
    • Fix: Regular inspection and replacement of worn components.
  1. Suspension Noise

    • Problem: Clunking or knocking sounds from the front suspension, often due to worn stabilizer bar links or bushings.

Common Electrical Issues

  1. Battery Drain

      • Problem: Parasitic drain caused by faulty modules or aftermarket accessories.
      • Fix: Diagnose and replace faulty components.
  1. Power Window Failures

      • Problem: Slow operation or complete failure due to faulty motors or regulators.
      • Fix: Replace the window motor or regulator.
  1. Faulty Sensors

      • Problem: Erratic behaviour from TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) or engine sensors.
  1. Keyless Entry/Remote Issues
      • Problem: Intermittent failure to lock/unlock doors or start the vehicle.
      • Fix: Replace key fob batteries or faulty receivers.
  1. Dashboard Cracking
    • Problem: Cracks in the dashboard, particularly in warmer climates.
    • Fix: Dashboard replacement or repair.

Competitors

The 2012 Nissan Altima competes with other mid-size sedans.

Competitor Pros Cons
Toyota Camry Best reliability, high resale value Bland styling, expensive
Honda Accord Strong resale, fun-to-drive Higher repair costs
Hyundai Sonata Good warranty, feature-packed Less refined handling
Ford Fusion Available AWD, modern styling Lower reliability
Chevrolet Malibu Affordable used prices Less engaging to drive

The Camry and Accord are better choices for long-term reliability, but the Altima is often cheaper.

Key Recalls

    • CVT (2012): Nissan extended warranties for CVT issues (check eligibility).
    • Airbag (2012): NHTSA 16V-356 (Takata airbag recall).
    • Brake System (2012): Recalls for ABS module or brake line issues.

Recommendations

    • Check Recalls: Verify open recalls using Nissan’s recall lookup tool or the NHTSA VIN database.
    • Monitor Oil Levels: Regularly check and top off oil, especially in 2.5L 4-cylinder models.
    • Inspect the CVT: Address rough shifting early; consider a fluid flush if not done.
    • Test the Battery: Check for parasitic drain and replace if necessary.
    • Monitor Engine Performance: Address rough idling or hesitation early.

Reliability Note

The 2012 Nissan Altima is generally reliable, but the CVT issues and engine oil consumption are notable concerns. Regular maintenance and prompt recall repairs will help avoid major issues. Always prioritize pre-purchase inspections for used models.

Pros & Cons

Pros

✅ Good Fuel Economy – Up to 32 MPG highway (I4).

✅ Comfortable Ride – Smooth suspension and quiet cabin.

✅ V6 Offers Strong Power – 270 hp in the 3.5 SR trim.

✅ Standard Push-Button Start – More advanced than some rivals.

✅ Affordable Used Prices – Less expensive than Honda/Toyota competitors.

Cons

❌ CVT Reliability Issues – Expensive repairs if it fails.

❌ Interior Materials Feel Cheap – Lower trims have hard plastics.

❌ Timing Chain & Oil Consumption Issues (V6 & I4) – Expensive to repair.

❌ Dashboard Melting in Hot Climates – No recall from Nissan.

❌ Not as Reliable as Camry/Accord – Engine & transmission issues are common.

Final Verdict

The 2012 Nissan Altima is a solid mid-size sedan with good fuel efficiency and a strong V6 option. However, CVT reliability is a major concern, and other mid-size sedans (Toyota Camry, Honda Accord) offer better long-term durability.

👉 Verdict: Best for buyers on a budget who prioritize fuel economy and comfort. If long-term reliability is a priority, consider the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord instead. 🚗💨

I swear by Dardoor manuals and have purchased one for every car and truck I’ve ever owned. I purchased this to help with an oxygen sensor removal that was in a difficult location. On this occasion it didn’t help me to find if there was a simpler way to remove it without taking several other parts off first but it always comes in handy and I used it to get the correct torque settings when putting the new sensor in. Wouldn’t purchase any other brand of workshop manual.
